We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

San Francisco Dead Animal Tip:

What does one do with a dead deer in this yard?

Many of us love living in the country because we get to enjoy flora, fauna, and the sounds of nature. Every now and then, you have to face the down side of country living- a dead animal in or near your yard. One of the first questions you probably ask yourself is – how did it get here?

Deer become hurt or ill and ultimately die for a number of reasons. Being struck by a car is one of the main reasons that a dear may wander up and die in your yard. Death by Automobile is the most common cause of deer fatalities in the U.S. An estimated $40 million dollar worth of damage is done each year from vehicles hitting deer. When struck by an automobile a deer usually suffers massive internal injuries. This causes internal bleeding so in many instances the animal will travel a good distance from the scene before it dies. Your yard may be the perfect spot for a deer to lie down and attempt to heal. Often damages are too great and it dies in the same spot. Hunters, snare traps, and animal attacks can be other causes for a deer to die. Old age and illness can also contribute to the deer mortality rate.

If you discover a body in or near your yard, you probably want it gone. Some folks might wonder about the meat, but it is probably not a good idea to eat venison if you do not know why the animal died, or how long it has laid there. Another consideration is a rack (if it is a buck). Some scavenging humans will take the head if it has a nice rack. This leaves an even bigger mess. You might think about leaving it for predators to consume. After all, they are plenty of carrion feeders in the woods –right. Before you make this choice, think about how close the body is to your home. The corpse will attract huge amounts of flies, be covered in maggots, beetles, and worms, and stink for quite a while. It can attract other predators like wolves, wild hogs, feral dogs, big cats, and buzzards. Even after scavengers have feasted, there will be bits of skin and bones left behind. Do you want this just outside your home?

If the corpse is on public property, you are lucky. You can contact the local sanitation department, or call the department of roads and bridges. These county/city entities will pick up the mess free. If it is on private land and you are not the owner, you must live with their decision, and it will not cause you problems. If it is on your land, having it removed will probably cost you. An animal removal service will come and clean up the scene, but will expect you to pay enough to compensate for their time, gas, equipment (often deer weigh hundreds of pounds), and any dump fees they incur. While this may seem like a great expense, it may beat the alternative.
